Root-end surgery information
Apicoectomy.
An apicoectomy is a surgical procedure that treats the area around a tooth’s root tip. It may be considered when a problem persists after root canal treatment.
Why it may be considered
Your clinician evaluates the source of the problem, the tooth’s condition, and whether non-surgical retreatment or another option is more suitable. Surgery is not necessary for every tooth with symptoms after treatment.
What the procedure involves
The treating clinician accesses the root end through the gum, removes affected tissue and a small portion of the root tip, and may place a root-end filling. The area is closed and monitored during healing.
Discuss the individual plan
Ask who would perform the procedure, whether specialist care is needed, the expected benefits and risks, alternatives, and follow-up. Healing and outcomes vary.
Contact the office about a tooth that is painful, swollen, or has changed after treatment. Read about retreatment.
