Understanding root canal treatment
Non-surgical root canal treatment.
Root canal treatment addresses damaged or infected tissue inside a tooth. The goal is to retain a tooth that can be restored rather than remove it.
Why treatment may be needed
Deep decay, cracks, or injury can affect the pulp inside a tooth. Symptoms and examination findings guide diagnosis; toothache alone does not tell you which procedure is needed.
What treatment involves
Your dentist discusses anesthesia, opens the tooth, removes affected tissue, and cleans and seals the canals. The tooth then needs an appropriate final restoration. The number of appointments depends on the case.
After treatment
Follow the instructions provided, attend restoration appointments, and call about worsening pain, swelling, or a bite that feels wrong. Treatment does not guarantee that every tooth can be saved.
If a previously treated tooth needs attention
Read about retreatment and root-end surgery. An evaluation determines whether treatment or specialist referral is appropriate.
