Gum and restorative care
Crown lengthening.
Crown lengthening reshapes gum tissue, and sometimes underlying bone, to expose more of a tooth. It may be considered for restorative or selected appearance-related concerns.
Why a dentist may discuss it
When decay or a fracture extends near or below the gumline, more sound tooth may be needed for a restoration. Crown lengthening is one possible approach; it is not the only option in every case.
Planning matters
Your clinician assesses the roots, supporting bone, gum health, nearby teeth, and proposed restoration. Discuss whether the tooth can be predictably restored and whether a specialist evaluation is appropriate.
Healing and restoration
The treatment plan should explain surgical risks, recovery, changes in gum appearance, and when a final restoration could be placed. Healing and timing vary.
