Heart Health Awareness Month: oral and heart health.

Gum disease is associated with cardiovascular disease, but an association is not proof that one directly causes the other or that dental treatment prevents heart attacks.

What the evidence means

The American Heart Association’s December 16, 2025 scientific-statement announcement describes increasing evidence of an association while noting there is no direct evidence that periodontal treatment prevents cardiovascular disease.

Care for your gums because oral health matters. Continue medical prevention and treatment recommended by your healthcare team; dental care is not a replacement.

Information to share

Tell your dentist about heart conditions, procedures, medicines, and your medical team’s instructions. Do not stop blood-thinning medicines or start antibiotics on your own before a dental visit.

Daily care and follow-up

Brush with fluoride toothpaste, clean between teeth, avoid tobacco, and attend recommended dental examinations. Discuss blood pressure, diabetes, exercise, and other cardiovascular concerns with your medical clinician.
